He is fearful of every knock at the door. Johnny, who has been sitting silently by the fire, immediately sees that the money might enable them to move somewhere else – somewhere they are not known. The use of the word “strut” suggests a pompous style. Right up to the end of the play – when he cruelly dismisses his own daughter for falling pregnant before she is married – he continues to be unreliable and untrustworthy to all who know him.

BFI Screenonline: Juno and the Paycock () Synopsis

June Juno is the wife of ‘Captain’ Boyle and the ‘paycock’ or peacock is her name for him, because he struts about all day, leaving her to work to put food on the table. His self-involved nature means he is a bad father, husband and friend.

Mary Boyle has two suitors – Jerry Devine, a young manual worker with political ambitions, and Charles Bentham, a solicitor, who has news for the family – they have been left some money by the Captain’s cousin. They go up to the Boyle apartment, interrupting the furniture removers at their work. As he leaves for the pub, Jerry Devine arrives, to offer Mary marriage and security, having heard that his rival is out of the way.

Boyle knows it is Johnny. When Juno returns everything has been taken from their rooms. The creditors start to call. Even the language used in his physical description depicts him as a showy man – his face is “puffed out”, his stomach “thrust forward” and his walk is a “slow, consequential strut”.

Don’t read on if you don’t want to know the ending! For example, when he finds out that his only daughter is pregnant he thinks solely of the effect Mary’s pregnancy will have on him and his imagined reputation. He is called ‘Captain’ by his friends, but the nearest he has ever got to sailing is on the ferry to Liverpool.

As an unmarried mother, Mary’s situation would have attracted great stigma at the time. Boyle and Johnny are furious that Mary has brought this shame upon the family, but Juno says all they have to do is move to somewhere they are not known, with the money they received from the legacy. Mrs Boyle manages to calm him.

They have borrowed money too, on the strength of the legacy. Two men in trench coats arrive. The partygoers decide they can get a better view of the procession downstairs.

Boyle explains that Robbie and Johnny were once inseparable. When it finally dawns on him, he is quick to change his mind. Through the window comes the sound of hymn singing. They do this because it is clear that Jack is never going to change and will be of no use to them as he neither brings in income nor helps around the house.

Madigan arrives and the party continues, until Mrs.

They hold a party, but the jollity is disrupted when Johnny suddenly jumps up in distress and runs to the bedroom, where he claims to see a ‘vision’ of dead Robbie Tancred. We are introduced to the character of Jack Boyle before we meet him via his wife, Juno, at the opening of Act I. The irony of course is that ghe has never had any of this money and never will.

By the time a drunken Boyle and Joxer xnd to the stripped apartment, they have gone. Boyle has to tell her and Johnny that there is no money – the will specified ‘first cousin’ rather than naming Boyle, and now ‘first cousins’ are appearing out of the woodwork.

Juno and the Paycock This aspect of his personality is reinforced as the play progresses.
