The more sinister nature of Victor’s influences becomes apparent in later volumes. This next part really gave me the whim whams! Though I read it back in the 80’s, I have since re-read it a couple of times and I still find it engaging.
The Remillard family saga continues, as the death of the evil Vic somehow generates two evil successors–the mysterious Fury and the five-part Hydra; Fury is intent on destroying humanity’s strengthening links with the Milieu, while the psycho-vampire Hydra, controlled by Fury, goes round draining its victims of life- force.

The characters are amazing, with rich depths and particular quirks that blend in well with the evolving destiny of humankind. He thoroughly repents of his great evil, and becomes the enlightened leader of the same galactic society that starts the intervention, calling himself Atoning Unifex. Coercion is the ability of metapsychic mind control over other people. The initial four books make up The Saga of Pliocene Exile.
I seem to remember these being less clear the first time around, but it is difficult to really say with any degree of certainty by this stage.

Although Jack has the outward appearance of a normal human child, his intellect and mental prowess rapidly set him apart from the rest of humankind, as does the fact that his body begins to generate inoperable and incurable tumours that are slowly overwhelming him.
I am interested enough however to start the second book in this series, so consider that a recommendation.
Jack and Dorothea manage to halt the rebel fleet, thanks to their ability to conjoin the powers tje all the pro-Milieu operant humans. It seems that it is a natural continuation of a cycle which begins with The Many-Colored Land and ends up with The Adversary.
Characters were too self absorbed for me to get all the way through this.
Julian May describes five categories of “metapsychic” powers in the series: But there are at least a dozen other characters, many of them too minor to deserve a POV of their own. Even though that sounds completely insane it actually works out fine and you forget that hes really just a floating brain. The reader never stays in the head of any of them long enough with the sole exception of Rogi. They discover that they have unusual mental abilities which admittedly turn out to be far less than those of later generations of metapyschics.
She folds in a wealth of detail about her future history, her usual interesting way of writing psychics, a good examination of far flung family dynamics and throws in a serial killer almost as an aside and yet the book still chugs along without coming across as too bloated. As tension builds and several children start to co-adunate, the rebels’ long-laid plans move into action.
The baby, Jack, turns out to be a super-duper operant but a genetic wreck, and must psychically save himself from death by cancer; Marc is tempted by Fury’s megalomaniac notions; Hydra five Remillard youngsters is unmasked but escapes; we never find out who Fury is. One wet night, Denis’ favorite daughter, Anne Remillard — a staunch loyalist and advocate of Unity — visits Rogi’s bookshop.
In the yearEarth stood on the brink of acceptance as full member of the Galactic Milieu, a confederation of worlds spread across the galaxy. He mind-lasers Madeleine, aided by the CE, and has her frozen so that her ovaries may be used. Don become jealous of Denis’s powers but, through Denis’s young coercion, is rendered unable to hurt him. Victor, meanwhile, goes after Rogi who has learned too much. The Ghost first rescued Rogi as a child, and many years later rescued Don after Rogi tried to kill him in a rage for stealing his girlfriend.
These amplify a human’s inherent metapsychic ability by orders of magnitude. Rogi worries about Denis’s education, as his local school is not challenging, but Don does not see education as something to invest in for his children – especially for Denis. As with any good science fiction writer a lot goes into establishing time and place. One of my favorite books.

To be sure, there are some vague glimpses of the overstory which are appreciated, and it is interesting to see the continuing story of Remillard family and insight into the early character of Marc Remillard, but jqck to the nature of the setting for the plot there is bodilless less action or wow factor to the story. It added to the inconsistency of the book. Most of what happens in the middle of the book doesn’t have any bearing whatsoever on the end or the beginning.
