I am out for a bargain; the object should be desirable from the standpoint of its social value, and at the same time should want me, considering my overt and hidden assets and potentialities. If you are a very traditional conservative white middle-class cisgender person, who is familiar with the bible but still loves Freud: Only the non conformist can be truly happy in a capitalistic society. Two persons thus fall in love when they feel they have found the best object available on the market, considering the limitations of their own exchange values.
In no other book are Freud’s Victorian sensibilities so exposed – cult of nuclear family, Calvinist hatred of self-love, etc. But will you learn the “art of love” from reading this book?

I can see a little spark in the text every now and then, some hopeful words that can be seen as wise and guiding. If love were only a feeling, there would be no basis for the promise to love each other forever.

Anna rated it really liked it Aug 24, He lists characteristics a person should have in order to love someone – humility, integrity, discipline, etc. The title of the book, the word “Art” followed by action verb like “loving,” gives an impression of art of deception rather than love.
Thanks for telling us about the problem. But if the wrapping of these messages is just one big pile of discrimination not very lovable. This started out with some really interesting insights that I agreed with, but then gradually went downhill. If only those Frankfurt guys were a bit more… hip, I guess?
