I skipped or skimmed some of the middle part of the book. I was raised in a a Christian belief, indoctrinated in its faith from the time I was born and was being primed for the ministry as a young man. He lost friends and he gained friends. Atheists Agnostics Humanists Pantheists Deists. But a leading atheist? He attended a Bible college, married a Christian woman, and spawned four children, all the while figuring out ways to scrape out a living by freelance preaching and composing songs of worship.

And love that story about the debate. Second, Dan Barker’s journey from minister to atheist is only one third of this book and it is the most interesting part.


Barker did a fine job demonstrating the evidence or rather lack of it for a historical Jesus, and godlesx a nice picture of the primary sources available from the time period.

Guys like Barker are a dime a dozen.

I find my departure from Christianity to be very similar to his, not because I feel cheated or wronged or hurt although each of these have certainly narker the case, at times, as well ; but because I feel lied to and manipulated by men with respect titles they don’t deserve, men with degrees in things they can’t possibly know. He let the guest speakers shine, and played the consummate host, even tho, as I discovered later, he had a bad cold at the time. Even the least educated atheist knows enough about the bible to judge its reliability or relevance.

He is the author of several books including Losing Faith in Faith: From Preacher to Atheist. Xan the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can’t be taken on its own merits.

But it is quite interesting and true.

Love is not obedience, conformity, or submission. I did not lose my faith — I gave it up purposely. Barer was struck by how he earned his living as a preacher, like some sort of freelance performance artist.

The first section on his story certainly offered badker author some credibility for me personally, as I fall under the evangelical category. I am really glad that I read through to the end of the book.

He could have not listed every preacher he ever knew who was a closet atheist, or spend so many pages detailing gocless foundation’s social efforts. As it stands, a few of the things of which he does not go into very much depth felt understated and brought the pace and academic tone a little down.

I wish more Christians would read this. Using logical arguments pointing out discrepancies and contradictions in Biblical teaching; arguing that by definition God cannot be timeless, nor can a god be both infinitely merciful and infinitely powerfulmoral arguments citing the many barbarous acts the Bible condonesand linguistic arguments citing arguments over translations of the Bibleamong others, Barker attempts to dismantle the idea of an inerrant Bible and a moral Christian God.

You are full of pride and are putting yourself above God. The downside is that for the first time in my life and I never thought this would dam I found myself actually thinking that an abridged version would be better!

I need to set things straight and put Reason where it belongs in my life.
