It is only fair that I mention both the good and the bad – right?! Good prose has so many different forms. Seidenman, who was bereft of all companionship since her husband’s passing, realizes that the brave acts of friends and neighbors have saved her from certain death, forever grateful. Americans are so fond of black-and-white WW2 stories. This is not an easy book to read due to the shifting narration and the time spans each narrator covers, I would say you really need to read this with nothing distracting you and that once you have read it through go back to the beginning and start again with an idea of how the book is structured so you can follow the narrative and benefit from the insights you gained first time round.
But the book didn’t blow me away like it did so many other readers. A cast of characters work together to help Irma escape, and therein is really the beauty, to me, of this novel.

It has become more than posh, almost common to structure novels via a series of inter-related stories. It’s in Warsaw. I suspect Anthony Marra is a fan of this novel as he copies and andrzfj Szczypiorski’s tactic of linking disparate characters with a single hidden thread and also telling us early on how their lives will pan out in the future. Anyone with any interest in the war needs to read this book. The author also reveals what will happen to each character in the future – where will he live, how will he die. But we are used to that, Mr.
The room was in szczypiorsik because the judge was a lover of twilight. The stories of the individual interconnected lives he focuses on are initially deeply compelling.
While an interesting read, for me it pales in comparison with Life and Fatewhich was about a cross section of life in Russia during WW2.
