I wouldn’t call it a ‘good’ read, simply because it isn’t the best idea for a complete beginner. With enormous intelligence and enthusiasm, he guides the reader through this vastly complex and rich tradition, finely balancing historical background with highly informed criticism. It would be presumptuous as well as impossible to evaluate Professor Daiches’ two volume history of Daichex literature. The contents of the book are good and very useful for students and scholars of English Literature.
