Throughout his entire career, Harmony Korine has managed to turn the beautiful and the ugly into each other simultaneously, thus, allowing those who willingly acknowledge his work to possibly find some sort of new meaning within life.

I tried to read this with no prior expectations. Star Cavalli, Elaine Cottrell, Rihanna. Refresh and try again. This book does that. He’s not crafting intricate tales full of characterization, tragedy, and wit. Be kind, black humour and party!! Filled with short, strange stories, this excellently scatterbrained writing gives direct insight to Korine’s dark, tunnel visioned humor, twisted thought processes and overall knowledge on all things weird.

Some of the ugly parts of our society shine through in this book, just as in his films, riot it was so scattered and the snippets on each page were short enough that very little continuity of any kind accrued. I read this in April and I can’t remember much of my opinion of it now, which means it’s not going to stick with me. He spoke of a love called JB. Even in print most of this feels face it strives to be an image moreso than a piece of writing.

I share this because it’s the only part that stuck out. Otherwise, “A Crackup at the Race Riots” is an essential collection for those who either appreciate or despise how Korine has developed an ultimate portrait of omnipresence.

Back in when I was going through my “Oh my fucking god, Harmony Korine’s movies changed my life” phase, I scavenged the internet for this previously out of print book endlessly.

Thoughts rarely extend beyond 1 paragraph. Raised in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of PBS cinematographer Sol Korine spent many of his days at revival theaters, drawing vast inspiration from a wide variety of envelop-pushing filmmakers.
